An Amulet for Philosophical Poets

From the first canzone of Dante’s Convivio, recalled after reading Edmund Hardy’s interview with Peter Larkin at Intercapillary Space:

dicendo lor, diletta mia novella;
“Ponete mente almen com’io son bella!”

Canzone, I fear there will be few
who understand your meaning well,
so difficult and fierce is your telling of it.
Therefore if by chance it happens
that you go before some people
who don’t seem to grasp it,
I beg you, my new delight,
take heart! and tell them,
“Consider at least how beautiful I am!”

My review of Larkin’s Leaves of Field can be found here (PDF).
