Sarah Palin’s Sentences

Having once somewhat cheekily included a sentence diagram in a book review, I was charmed this morning to see grammarian Kitty Burns Florey take on the sentences of Sarah Palin over at Slate. Check it out here.

  1. Has anyone diagrammed the (unscripted)words of Joe Biden or Obama? Without a teleprompter,Obama can’t manage a complete sentence.

  2. Robert,

a/ I agree with you in one sense, and Kitty Burns Florey does, too: it’s something of a cheap shot to diagram someone’s spoken sentences, and we’d all probably come out looking just as bad as Palin did if someone tried it with our words.

b/ I don’t agree, however, about Obama and Biden’s off-the-cuff speaking abilities. I know this a favorite talking point for McCain supporters, but I have to wonder where they all were when he gave his four-part interview to Bill O’Reilly. I think it’s fair to say that that interview was ten times more hostile than anything Sarah Palin has come close to. And Obama gave good substantive answers and managed more than a few complete sentences despite O’Reilly’s constant interruptions.
